Project Highlights

The Fitzsimmons Creek Debris Barrier is British Columbia’s first large-scale debris barrier designed specifically for debris floods.

Located upstream of Whistler, the barrier protects Whistler Village from the full force of a debris flood by:

  • Slowing the velocity of the flood;
  • detaining up to 34,000 cubic metros of debris and
  • withstanding an impact equivalent to a 2.8 tonnes boulder slamming into it at 5 metros per second.
  • The unique design significantly advances state of the art hazard mitigation on mountain creeks.
