Western Headworks Canal Catchment, Stormwater Quality Upgrades
Project Highlights
In association with another consultant, KWL quantified non-point sources of stormwater pollution in a 3,500 ha urban catchment and developed potential treatment options to reduce the total pollutant load to the receiving water body, the Western Headworks Canal. This included continuous simulation computer modelling using MUSIC (Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualization), to derive pollutant loadings for the catchment as a whole as well as for different surface types.
Innovative source control solutions were developed for each surface type and then modelled to assess their pollutant removal efficiencies and cost effectiveness. End-of-pipe BMPs were also assessed. The results of this study are intended to be used to prepare an optimized strategy for implementing source controls and low impact development BMPs within the catchment.
