Project Highlights

KWL was retained by Pacific Coast Terminals Co. Ltd. (PCT) to design and oversee the construction of upgrades to its recycled water and wastewater treatment system.  The upgrades involved replacing a settling pond with a clarifier so that PCT could free up land for a potash terminal expansion.  The upgrades also allowed PCT to improve effluent quality and the sludge collection process, and increased the amount of on-site water that could be recycled for process water uses such as washdown and maintenance activities.  This significantly reduced PCT’s demand for fresh water.

The Recycled Water Upgrade included the design and construction of the following equipment:

  • solids contact clarifier
  • clarifier overflow attenuation tank
  • flocculant make down and dosing system
  • pump stations to pump water to and from the clarifier
  • clarifier underflow sludge handling pumps
  • sludge dewatering building, and
  • new effluent line from the clarifier top to two existing storage tanks.

The engineering services provided by KWL to PCT included the following areas of expertise:

  • Detailed design of process water treatment systems;
  • Contract administration and construction oversight
  • Automation and process control
  • Chemical dosing systems
  • Spill response plans to chemical containment
  • Commissioning – including final equipment testing and control integration
  • Environmental and municipal permitting and approvals, and
  • Effluent water quality monitoring.
