Project Highlights

The City of New Westminster retained KWL to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a District Energy System (DES) in the Sapperton area of New Westminster.  This area is favorable to district energy as it includes the Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), existing and future mixed-use developments, and a potential biomass supplier within a one kilometre radius.  This project was divided into two phases: Phase 1, which was completed in April 2012, included demand analysis and energy cost estimate for the RCH loads only in order to assess whether it is economic for the hospital to switch to a hot water and/or renewable energy system and potentially become an anchor load for a DES; Phase 2, which started in August 2012 includes a thorough biomass system analysis, high-level systems design and a financial analysis.
