Fort Nelson Water Treatment Upgrades
Project Highlights
KWL has had a long-standing relationship with the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM). NRRM had engaged KWL to carry out several projects to improve their existing water distribution system to meet deficiencies identified in their Water Master Plan. One of the specific projects from the plan was to upgrade the existing water treatment plant to improve the production capacity at the Fort Nelson Water Treatment Plant. KWL developed an optimization plan for the Fort Nelson Water Treatment Plant that includes the following key aspects:
- Replacing the existing filtration underdrain system with a new low-profile underdrain system that does not require gravel media.
- Adapt the filter media to imported UK anthracite.
- Convert the two process trains with existing tube settler clarifiers to a new dissolved air clarification process within the current process tank footprint.
- Improve pre-treatment for managing variations in raw water quality, including automation of coagulant dosing and pre-oxidation with potassium permanganate for manganese removal.
